August 16-18, 2019 @ Raven's Knoll, Algonquin Territory
Taking place in unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin territory on Turtle Island (colonially Canada), the purpose of this multi-day gathering is to re-connect with and adapt pre-colonial spiritwork oral teachings of ancestral and indigenous Philippines. Our hope is that this work will lead to the 1) strengthening and healing of Pilipinx/Filipino diasporic communities, and 2) support for the self-determination of and justice for the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island.
Please read a full Algonquin Anishinaabe land acknowledgement written by Dr. Lynn Gehl here. She is a special speaker that will be sharing teachings with us during Opening Ritual about the Algonquin people, and during Sunday morning teachings on settler responsibilities. For more about Dr. Lynn Gehl, please read our section on special speakers.
Though this is a free event (donations welcome), registration is mandatory, to ensure that we can accommodate the access needs, food requirements, and transportation costs of the gathering. This gathering takes place on spiritual camping grounds called Raven's Knoll. There are limited trailer accommodations (1-3 are available) and possibly one cabin, otherwise you will need to bring your own tent, sleeping bag, toiletries, etc. There will be toilets that flush, coin-operated showers (they take quarters), coin-operated laundry, and running water on-site. For more information, visit www.ravensknoll.ca/faq/. If you need support in regards to shelter/accommodations during this gathering, please indicate that in your Registration form in the section entitled "Emergency Contact & Access Needs".
This gathering centres people with ancestry from the islands colonially known as the Philippines. We also prioritize any Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour who would like to join us in Ceremony. Those with only European ancestry are welcome to register, but attendance is not guaranteed. Exceptions will be made for partners, co-parents, care attendants, caregivers, family members, and other helpers who need to be on-site.
All those who attend the gathering are part of it in some way, as helpers, teachers, dancers, singers, musicians, and builders. Though there will be joy and celebration in the ways we spend time together, also understand that this is a sacred and ceremonial space/time, and remember to act in reverence to the Ancestors and Spirits that will be gathering with us. This gathering also centres, prioritizes, and celebrates the sacred nature of those among us that are labeled or self-identify as Two Spirit, nonbinary, queer, trans, pansexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersex, androgynous, genderqueer, genderfluid, etc., etc. A special closed meeting will be held just for this group on Sunday at 9am, where teachings will be shared by Pilipinx members of the Organizing Committee and special speaker Sharp Dopler.
